Buchanan Field Runway Diagram Print

Buchanan Field's diagram is built on an X. Runway 01L/19R, 5,001 feet long and 150 feet wide, crosses 14L/32R, which measures 4,602 by 150 feet, and in the print the two long strips meet high in the upper half of the field. 01L climbs from the lower left toward 19R at the top right; 14L drops from the upper left down to 32R at the lower right. Both are plotted from published runway data and inked solid, so the crossing point becomes the anchor the eye keeps returning to.

Two shorter strips sit inside that X and keep it from feeling symmetrical. 14R/32L, 2,798 by 75 feet, runs parallel to 14L/32R and just to its west, stopping around the middle of the field. 01R/19L, 2,770 by 75 feet, shadows the long 01L/19R lower down on the sheet. Drawn at half the width of their neighbors, the pair reads as fine rule lines against the two heavy diagonals, with the apron and hangar rows held back in a lighter tone so the runway bearings stay first in the hierarchy.

The field itself is a general and business public airport in Contra Costa County, one mile west of the center of Concord and just east of Pacheco in the San Francisco Bay Area. The county bought the land in 1942, and the airport took the Buchanan name in 1947 after County Supervisor William J. Buchanan. In 1969 a helicopter operator scheduled Sikorsky S-61 flights from the field to Oakland, and in 1972 George Lucas shot one of the last exterior scenes of American Graffiti here. None of that history shows up as ornament in the artwork; it just explains why a 26 foot elevation site carries four runways instead of one.
