Volk Field Runway Diagram Print

Volk Field prints as one long line and very little else. The single runway, 09/27, measures 9,000 ft by 150 ft on concrete, and it runs flat across the upper third of the sheet with the end numbers set into the strip at each tip. Everything below it is ground: a deep apron broken into rounded bays, a taxiway running most of the length of the field, and a row of small blocks over toward the 27 end.

The field is a military airport near the village of Camp Douglas in Juneau County, Wisconsin, also known as the Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center. The first hard-surface runways went in during 1935 and 1936, when Camp Williams was still mostly a range and a training camp. The installation took the Volk name in 1957, in memory of 1st Lieutenant Jerome A. Volk, the first Wisconsin Air National Guard pilot killed in combat in the Korean War, and the site was re-designated a Combat Readiness Training Center in 1989.

The training role explains the proportions. In 1990 Volk Field was the primary point of embarkation for soldiers and equipment from nearby Fort McCoy, and since 2006 it has served, along with Fort McCoy, as the primary location for Patriot Warrior, the largest annual training exercise for Air Force Reserve Command. A field built to stage and launch heavy movements earns one very long strip and a great deal of pavement to hold aircraft on, and that is what the drawing shows: no crossing runway, no second angle, just the strip and the apron under it.
