Lake Tahoe Airport Runway Diagram Print

Lake Tahoe Airport works a single runway, 18/36, 8,541 by 100 feet, and the print is that one long strip carrying the whole composition. The field opened in 1959 in the Sierra Nevada mountains just south of Lake Tahoe, and scheduled flights began in 1962 with Futura Airlines and Paradise Airlines, both working Lockheed L-049 Constellations into the valley. Pacific Air Lines arrived in 1964 with Fairchild F-27 turboprops, and in 1966 brought the first jets in, Boeing 727-100s routed from Los Angeles through San Jose. That 727 experiment lasted less than a year, and after it ended the local government banned scheduled jet flights, a ban that held until 1983.

By spring 1981 six regional and commuter airlines were listed at Lake Tahoe with a combined total of up to 24 flights a day, nonstop from Burbank, Fresno, Los Angeles, Oakland, Orange County, Reno, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Truckee. Scheduled passenger service ended in 2000, and general aviation has had the field to itself since then. Budget cuts in 2001 ended funding for the on-site weather observers who also worked as the airport's controllers, and the city council voted to close the control tower on October 1, 2004. The old airline terminal was renovated into the city hall for the City of South Lake Tahoe, which opened there in 2007.
