The field itself

This is St. Paul's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

St. Paul Downtown Holman Field Runway Diagram Print

St. Paul Downtown Holman Field (STP) has three asphalt runways, and the print gets its shape from how they sit against each other. Runway 14/32 is the long one at 6,491 by 150 ft, falling from the upper left corner to the lower right on the steepest line in the frame. Runway 13/31 begins just beside it near the top, 4,004 by 150 ft, and drifts away on a shallower angle, so the two of them open into a narrow wedge as they run down the page. Runway 09/27 is the short one at 3,642 by 100 ft, and it is drawn as a flat horizontal bar that cuts clean through both diagonals. Nothing here is parallel, which is why the composition holds together: three dark strokes, three different angles, one crossing point near the center and another off to the right.

The field sits just across the Mississippi River from downtown Saint Paul and covers 540 acres, and it is one of several reliever airports in the Twin Cities operated by the Metropolitan Airports Commission. It is also known as Holman Field, after Charles W. "Speed" Holman, a stunt pilot, barnstormer, wing walker, parachutist and airmail pilot; in 1928 he set a world record of 1,433 consecutive loops in five hours over the St. Paul Airport. The river is close enough to matter to the pavement itself. In 2009 a removable flood wall was installed, with steel plates embedded in the concrete on the river side of the runways and posts and planks stacked between them only when flooding is imminent, then taken down again.

As artwork, the piece is quiet and geometric. The taxiway network and the hangar rows along the left and lower left edges are held in a lighter tone so the runways stay the loudest thing in the frame, and the caption block reads STP, ST PAUL, MINNESOTA, the coordinates, and ELEV 705 FT. It suits a hallway, an office wall or the space above a desk, and it reads just as well from across a room as it does up close, where the runway numbers at each threshold come into focus. Hang it with other Minnesota fields, from Minneapolis to Rochester, and the set starts to look deliberate. It is offered as a Fine Art Print, a Framed Fine Art Print, a Glossy Metal Print or a Digital Download, in the colorway you choose.

St. Paul (STP) print, common questions

How many runways does St. Paul Downtown Holman Field have?

Three, and all three appear on the print: 14/32, 13/31 and 09/27. Two of them run on diagonals that spread apart toward the lower right, and 09/27 crosses both of them horizontally.

How long is the longest runway at STP?

Runway 14/32 is 6,491 ft long and 150 ft wide, the longest of the three. Runway 13/31 measures 4,004 by 150 ft, and 09/27 measures 3,642 by 100 ft. All three are asphalt.

Where is the airport, and how high is it?

The field elevation is 705 ft, and the airport is in St. Paul, Minnesota, just across the Mississippi River from downtown. The coordinates printed under the diagram are 44.9346 N, 93.0604 W.

What does STP stand for?

STP is the identifier for St. Paul Downtown Holman Field, and it is the code set in large type under the diagram. The four letter version is KSTP. The field is also known simply as Holman Field.

How accurate is the layout on this print?

The runway positions, lengths, widths and crossing angles are plotted from published airport information, so the wedge between 14/32 and 13/31 and the horizontal run of 09/27 follow the published data. This is wall art rather than a navigation document, and fine details may be simplified or omitted. Pavement markings, lighting and signage are the usual examples.

Does it work as a gift for a pilot?

Yes, especially for someone who flies out of Holman Field or trained there, since the three runway pattern is recognizable at a glance. Physical formats are made to order, and the Digital Download is a file if you would rather handle framing yourself.
