Rochester International Airport Runway Diagram Print

Rochester International Airport has two concrete runways and they cross near the middle of the field, which gives the print a long, open X. Runway 13/31 is the primary, 9,034 by 150 feet, and it falls across the sheet from the upper left down to the lower right. Runway 03/21 is 7,301 by 150 feet and climbs from the bottom of the sheet up to the right, meeting 13/31 near the middle of its own length. Field elevation is 1,317 feet and magnetic variation is 1W, which is about as close to true north as a plotted diagram gets.

The built side of the field sits east of the crossing, in the upper right of the frame: two separate apron groups, a fan of taxiway connectors, and rows of small blocks for the terminal, the freight buildings and the hangars. Southwest of the crossing the drawing thins to the runway and one parallel taxiway running down to the 3 threshold, and the lower left of the sheet is left blank. That contrast between one crowded quadrant and three quiet ones is most of what makes the layout work as a wall piece.

The airport exists because of the Mayo Clinic. The first Rochester field was founded in 1928 by the Mayo Foundation to fly patients in, and the Rochester Airport Company was set up as a Foundation subsidiary the following year. Northwest Airlines began running Ford Trimotors from St. Paul, making Rochester one of the earliest destinations in that airline's network. The Army Air Corps trained out of the field during World War II, the Mayo Foundation handed it to the city in 1945, and it was renamed Lobb Field in 1952. In 1970 a scheduled helicopter service briefly connected Rochester to Minneapolis before it was canceled that December.

The current airport opened in 1960 seven miles south of downtown, on ground that could take larger airliners; the old field closed in 1961. Customs and immigration facilities were added in 1995 for Mayo Clinic purposes, which is when the airport became Rochester International, and the primary runway reached its 9,034 feet after a three month closure in 2005. One more detail belongs to a diagram print: during the week of May 1, 2023, crews renumbered runway 2/20 as 3/21 because the magnetic north pole had moved far enough to change the runway's designator. The print carries the current numbers.
