Mason City Municipal Airport Runway Diagram Print

MCW plots two asphalt runways: 18/36 at 6,501 by 150 feet and 12/30 at 5,502 by 150 feet. On the sheet, 18/36 stands as a single hard vertical bar down the right side, and 12/30 cuts in as a diagonal from the upper left, the two lower ends coming together near the bottom right so the pair reads as a V opening toward the top of the print. Taxiways and apron edges sit back in a soft gray, which leaves the black runway bars to carry the composition, with a small cluster of hangar and terminal shapes near the bottom center for weight.

The field goes back to 1942, when Mason City decided to build a new airport, and the first official landing came in 1945. A remodeled farmhouse served as the first terminal at the dedication in 1946, the same year airline flights began on Mid-Continent. A new commercial service terminal opened in 2024, replacing a building put up in 1966, and SkyWest, operating as United Express, began flying from Mason City to Chicago O'Hare in 2021. Almost none of that reaches the print, which is the point: what you get is the field reduced to pavement and open ground.

The airport lies west of downtown Mason City in Cerro Gordo County, just east of Clear Lake. In 1959, after a concert at the Surf Ballroom in nearby Clear Lake, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. Richardson and pilot Roger Peterson died when their aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from here. The event is not commemorated anywhere on the airport grounds; a private monument stands near the crash site. The field appears in the record again in 1954, when a Braniff DC-3 that had departed Waterloo Regional Airport in nearby Waterloo crashed south of Mason City after entering a thunderstorm at low altitude.
