Roanoke/Blacksburg Regional (Woodrum Field) Runway Diagram Print

The ROA diagram reads as one long X. Runway 06/24 runs 6,800 feet by 150 feet on the diagonal, and 16/34 cuts across it at 5,810 feet by 150 feet, both asphalt. On the print the two strips meet well left of center, which leaves the taxiway loops, apron and terminal buildings massed down the right side in soft grey. The field elevation is 1,175 feet, and the crossing angle is what carries the whole composition.

Roanoke/Blacksburg Regional (Woodrum Field) sits three miles northwest of downtown Roanoke and covers 912 acres. It started as a pair of dirt runways and a single hangar, and the field took the name Woodrum Field in honor of Clifton A. Woodrum, the congressional representative from Virginia's Sixth District. American Airlines moved its operations to Lynchburg in 1937, and the city of Roanoke took control of the facility the same year. Runway 6/24 was later extended, with the work completed in 1985 and 900 feet added to its east end, and that project put a tunnel carrying Virginia State Route 118 under the runway. The added length is part of why one leg of the X here runs noticeably longer than the other.

Piedmont Airlines mattered most at this field: its Roanoke hub ran 45 daily flights and served 330,000 passengers by 1973, with nonstop routes reaching cities including Greensboro until 1989. The terminal in use today opened in 1989, and the 197 foot control tower has been operational since 2004. None of that shows up on the sheet, which keeps the pavement and lets everything else go quiet, but it is the reason the layout lands for anyone who grew up flying out of this valley.
