Smyrna Airport Runway Diagram Print

Smyrna Airport works two asphalt runways, and this print draws both to scale from published field information. Runway 14/32 is the long one at 8,038 feet by 150 feet, grooved, and carrying a precision instrument landing approach to the 32 end; 01/19 measures 5,546 feet by 100 feet. Their designators stand about 50 degrees apart, so the two strips cross at a narrow angle rather than a square one. Field elevation is 543 feet, and the magnetic variation of 2W sits small in the corner the way a chart carries it.

The proportions here are not what a town of this size would normally build. Until March 1971 the field was Sewart Air Force Base, and 1,700 acres with a main runway past 8,000 feet still reads like the installation it was. Civil operators moved in fast. Capitol International Airways, a supplemental carrier, consolidated its operations and headquarters at Smyrna in 1971 and flew until it shut down on November 25, 1984, and Emery Air Freight ran a package express hub off this ramp between 1979 and 1981.

Military flying never actually left. As of 2026 a Tennessee Army National Guard helicopter unit, Army Aviation Support Facility #1, works from the field with 60 helicopters and 300 full-time personnel, the Guard leases part of the airport for the Grubbs/Kyle Training Center, and there is a single 40 foot square concrete helipad on the property. C-130s of the Tennessee Air National Guard's 118th Airlift Wing trained here until the wing ended C-130 operations in 2012, and C-17s of the 164th Airlift Wing still use it. The civil side is busy on its own terms: 123,375 aircraft operations in the year ending January 2023, 88 percent of them general aviation, on a field twelve nautical miles south of Nashville International.
