Jackson Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

MKL reads as an off-center cross. The print draws two runways that meet at a single crossing point set high in the frame, above the taxiway loops and the apron. Runway 02/20 is the long member at 6,007 by 100 feet, running from the lower left corner up toward the top right. Runway 11/29 is shorter at 3,539 by 100 feet, cutting across the upper third from left to right and clipping 02/20 just past its midpoint. Both are asphalt. The field elevation is 435 feet. Because the crossing sits well north of center, the composition has weight at the top and a long clean diagonal running down through empty space, which is the whole reason this one hangs well.

Jackson Regional is a public use airport about four nautical miles west of downtown Jackson, owned by the city and the county. The Civil Works Administration was persuaded to acquire the property and build the initial runways and buildings in the 1930s, and the field was originally named in memory of Kenneth Douglas McKellar, a longtime U.S. senator from Tennessee. It was leased by the United States Army Air Forces in 1942 and operated as McKellar Field, a primary pilot training airfield where cadets flew PT-17 Stearman biplanes. Southern Airways connected the city to Memphis and Nashville in 1960. The airport carried the McKellar-Sipes name from the 1970s, for Major Robert Ray "Buster" Sipes, an Air Force test pilot from Jackson, before taking its current name.
