Key Field Runway Diagram Print

Key Field works two runways, and the diagram is built around the long one: 01/19 at 10,003 by 150 feet, asphalt and concrete, and the longest public use runway in Mississippi. Runway 04/22 adds 5,052 by 150 feet on a southwest to northeast heading. Field elevation is 298 feet above sea level and magnetic variation is 2W, so the plotted headings sit close to north. On the print the long strip runs nearly the full height of the frame, leaning a little west of vertical, while the shorter one climbs from the lower left and stops just short of it. The two do not cross. The 04 threshold ends about a runway width away from the long strip, and that small gap, with taxiway pavement running through it, is the detail the whole composition turns on.

Meridian is the county seat of Lauderdale County, about 93 miles east of Jackson by road, and the field lies three nautical miles southwest of the city. It was established in 1928 and opened in November 1930 with a terminal, a hangar, a powerhouse and a graded dirt runway. City officials asked Al and Fred Key, who ran a flying school at Bonita, to co-manage the new airport. When Depression era maintenance costs put the place at risk of closing, the brothers went after the standing 23 day flight endurance record to draw attention to it, and from June 4 to July 1, 1935 they flew over Meridian for a total of more than 27 days aloft. The field carries their name. The hangar and offices they used are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and the old terminal, hangar and powerhouse together form the earliest surviving airport complex in Mississippi.

As art, the layout is left to speak plainly. Runway designators, lengths and widths follow the published figures, and taxiways, apron edges and building footprints are reduced to flat geometry over the ground tone you choose. Because 01/19 dwarfs everything else on the field, the print gets a single strong vertical spine with the ramp and terminal blocks hung off its eastern side and a ladder of taxiway rectangles filling the space between.
