Lancaster Airport Runway Diagram Print

Two runways cross at Lancaster, and the print is built on that one shape: a long, lopsided X. Runway 8/26 runs 6,933 by 150 feet, climbing from the 8 threshold at the left of the field up to 26 at the top right, and it is the longer arm by a wide margin. Runway 13/31 is 4,102 by 100 feet, dropping from 13 in the upper left, through the intersection, down to 31 at the lower right. Both are asphalt. The two meet left of center, so the X leans instead of sitting square, which is why it holds a wall better than a centered one would.

The layout has old bones. A Lancaster Joint Aviation Committee formed in 1933, decided to operate a municipal airport, and bought 180 acres of farmland in southern Lititz to build it. In 1936 Lancaster became the second airport in Pennsylvania with two hard surface runways, certified for night as well as daytime operations. The field is owned by the Lancaster Airport Authority and covers 850 acres at an elevation of 403 feet. Runway 8/26 has since been lengthened, and at 6,933 feet it is the long stroke of the crossing. In 2020 the airport logged 73,087 aircraft operations, an average of 200 a day.

The rest of the sheet stays quiet under those two black strips: gray taxiway loops that pool at the runway ends, and the hangar rows, apron and parked aircraft gathered along the south side below the intersection. The airfield sits in the upper half of the frame, which leaves the lower right open for the LNS block, the coordinates and the 403 foot elevation line. Hang it alone and the crossing does the work; hang it beside Harrisburg and you have the start of a Pennsylvania wall.
