Langley AFB Runway Diagram Print

Langley AFB works a single runway, 08/26, 10,002 feet long and 150 feet wide in concrete, and that one strip carries the entire composition. In the print it reads as one long dark diagonal climbing from the lower left toward the upper right, with the 08 and 26 end markers set into the pavement at each tip. There is no crossing runway, no V, no X. Just one confident line through an otherwise quiet field, which is why this layout hangs so cleanly.

The runway, the taxiway loops and the ramp are drawn from published airport information and set in flat tones, so the contrast between the dark runway, the mid grey pavement and the open ground does the work. North of the centerline the taxiways close into long triangles. Along the southeast edge the drawing thickens into apron, hangar rows and dozens of small structures, a dense band of grey shapes that balances the empty acreage on the west side. Field elevation is 8 feet, and the magnetic variation is 10W.

Langley Field was the first Air Service base built specifically for air power, and it is the oldest continually active air force base in the world and the oldest airfield in Virginia. It sits on 3,152 acres between Hampton to the south, NASA LaRC to the west and the branches of the Back River, adjacent to Newport News. The name honors Samuel Pierpont Langley, the aerodynamic pioneer and former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. In 2010 the base was joined with Fort Eustis to become Joint Base Langley-Eustis.
