Leesburg Executive Airport Runway Diagram Print

JYO is a one runway field, and the print does not pretend otherwise. A single dark strip runs nearly top to bottom of the sheet with a slight lean, labeled 17 at the upper end and 35 at the lower end, matching the published designator 17/35. That runway measures 5,500 by 100 feet of asphalt at an elevation of 390 feet. Everything else in the image sits to one side of it: a parallel taxiway shadowing the strip for its full length, then apron pavement and hangar rows stepping east in three loose clusters.

The asymmetry is what makes this one work as art. Because all the built structure crowds the eastern edge, the runway reads as a hard vertical rule with weight hanging off its right shoulder, and the rest of the sheet stays open. Leesburg Executive covers 294 acres, so the drawing stays legible rather than dense. The taxiway loops between apron and runway give the composition its only curves, and the small scatter of tie down shapes near the middle breaks up the straight lines without cluttering them.

There is real history under that geometry. The airport was built in 1963 to replace an earlier grass field on the eastern edge of town, a field owned by radio personality Arthur Godfrey, and it was originally named Godfrey Field. In 1993 the Town of Leesburg took over direct operation of airport services and lengthened the runway twice, reaching 5,500 feet to support business jets. In 2015 Leesburg became the first airport in America to operate a remote air traffic control tower, in a test co-sponsored by the Commonwealth of Virginia and Saab-Sensis Corporation.
