McConnell AFB Runway Diagram Print

McConnell AFB reads as two long parallel runways and very little else. The print plots 01R/19L at 12,007 feet and 01L/19R at 12,000 feet, each 150 feet wide, set close together and running nearly top to bottom of the sheet with a slight lean. Two dark bars that long, held that close, give the composition a strong vertical spine before you read a single label.

Everything else in the drawing hangs off that pair. A large apron and building mass runs along the east side of the runways, a second ramp with hangar shapes sits out to the west, and taxiway connectors cut across the gap between the two strips at shallow angles. The corner block carries the identifier, the coordinates and the field elevation of 1,372 feet. From across a room the piece is graphic and calm: two stripes, one lean, open space around them. Up close there is enough ramp edge and connector detail to follow with your eye.

The field began as Wichita Municipal Airport and was redesignated Wichita Air Force Base in 1953, then renamed for the brothers Fred and Thomas McConnell, both Air Force pilots and World War II veterans. It became an air refueling hub for Strategic Air Command in 1973, and the 22d Air Refueling Wing was reassigned to the base in 1994. In 1991 a tornado crossed the southern end of the runways, the low end of this sheet where the 01 thresholds are marked. The base lies four miles southeast of the Wichita business district, with Hutchinson and Salina further out across the state, and nothing in the diagram competes with the runway pair for attention.
