The field itself

This is Hartford's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Hartford-Brainard Airport Runway Diagram Print

Hartford-Brainard carries three runways at an elevation of 18 feet, and the print makes clear how unevenly they share the field. Runway 02/20 is the long one, 4417 feet by 150 feet of asphalt, running almost the full height of the sheet on a slight tilt. Runway 11/29 arrives from the west at 2314 feet by 71 feet and meets 02/20 low on the page, near the 02 end, so the two paved strips read as a tall letter T leaning clockwise. The third runway is turf: NE/SW, 2323 feet by 150 feet, drawn as a stippled bar parallel to 02/20 and set off to the east with open ground between the two.

That arrangement is what carries the composition on a wall. One heavy vertical, one short arm near the bottom left, and a speckled parallel bar holding the right side keeps the eye moving instead of settling in the middle. Aprons, taxiways and hangar blocks sit in a lighter grey along the west flank of 02/20, including a rank of small rectangles that reads almost as texture at a distance. Threshold numbers stay legible inside the dark strips: 20 at the top, 2 at the bottom, 11 and 29 on the crossing runway, NE and SW on the turf. The identifier block sits in the lower right with the city, the coordinates and ELEV 18 FT, and the whole plot shifts in weight depending on the colorway you choose.

Two nearby Connecticut fields hang well beside this one, because their layouts run at different angles and different scales: Windsor Locks and New Haven. Grouped together, three prints from one corner of the state stop looking like repeated maps and start looking like a set of shapes, which is the argument for an airport map print in the first place.

Hartford (HFD) print, common questions

How many runways does Hartford-Brainard have?

Three. The longest is runway 02/20 at 4417 feet by 150 feet, asphalt. Runway 11/29 measures 2314 feet by 71 feet, also asphalt. The third is a turf runway listed as NE/SW, 2323 feet by 150 feet.

Where is HFD and how high is the field?

HFD is the identifier for Hartford-Brainard in Hartford, Connecticut, at 41.7367 degrees north and 72.6494 degrees west. Field elevation is 18 feet, which is printed on the artwork under the coordinates. The published magnetic variation is 15W.

Why is one runway labeled NE and SW instead of numbers?

The published airport data lists that turf runway by compass points rather than numbered ends, so the print follows it and marks the ends NE and SW. It is also drawn with a stippled fill instead of solid, which is how the turf surface is distinguished from the two asphalt runways.

How closely does the artwork follow the published layout?

It is plotted from published runway data, so lengths, widths, relative positions and orientations of all three runways follow that record, along with the apron and taxiway shapes. This is a design piece rather than a navigation chart, and fine details may be simplified or omitted. Surface markings, lighting and signage are the usual examples.

What formats does this Hartford-Brainard artwork come in?

Fine Art Print, Framed Fine Art Print, Glossy Metal Print and Digital Download. Physical pieces are made to order in a range of sizes, and the digital option is a file you print yourself. The tall runway 02/20 axis means the layout suits a portrait format at most sizes.

Does it work as a gift?

It works for anyone with a reason to know this field: pilots who trained on 02/20, people who grew up under the pattern in Hartford, or a hangar or office wall that wants something local and specific rather than generic aviation decor.
