The field itself

This is Fort Smith's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Fort Smith Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

Fort Smith Regional is a two runway field, and both runways cross: 08/26 runs 9,318 by 150 feet, 02/20 runs 5,001 by 150 feet, and both are asphalt. In the print they meet well left of center. The long runway falls across the sheet as a shallow diagonal, lifting slightly toward the 26 end, while the shorter runway drops through it at a steep angle from 20 down to 2. What you get on the wall is a tilted X rather than a symmetrical one, and that off-balance crossing is the whole composition.

Around the intersection, taxiways, aprons and hangar rows are rendered in a quiet grey so the two runways stay the darkest marks in the frame. Ramp clusters gather along the north and west sides: a squared apron up near the 20 end, a second block right of the crossing, and a run of smaller buildings stepping west toward the edge of the field. Field elevation is 469 feet, set small beneath the identifier with the coordinates, which keeps the lower corner calm and the geometry doing the talking.

The airport is a public use field near the Interstate 540 freeway, southeast of the central business district of Fort Smith, and it is governed by the Fort Smith Airport Commission as established by the City of Fort Smith. Since 1953 it has also been home to Fort Smith Air National Guard Station and the Arkansas Air National Guard's 188th Wing. Metroflight Airlines began flying from here to Dallas/Fort Worth and Fayetteville in 1982, one entry in a long commercial record that the same two strips of pavement still carry.

Fort Smith (FSM) print, common questions

How many runways does Fort Smith Regional have?

Two. Runway 08/26 is the long one at 9,318 by 150 feet, and runway 02/20 is 5,001 by 150 feet. Both are asphalt, and in the artwork they cross rather than run parallel.

How long is the longest runway at FSM?

9,318 feet, which is runway 08/26, at 150 feet wide. On the print it is the shallow diagonal that spans nearly the full width of the image.

Where is FSM and what is the field elevation?

Fort Smith Regional sits at Fort Smith, Arkansas, near 35.3366 N, 94.3661 W, at an elevation of 469 feet. Those coordinates and that elevation are printed under the identifier block.

What does FSM refer to on the print?

FSM is the identifier for Fort Smith Regional. It is the three letter code set large in the lower corner, with the city and state line beneath it, so the artwork reads as Fort Smith even from across a room.

How closely does the artwork follow the published layout?

The runways, taxiways and apron shapes are plotted from published airport information, so runway designators, the crossing angle and the relative lengths of 08/26 and 02/20 hold up. It is composed as artwork first, and fine details may be simplified or omitted. Pavement markings, lighting and small signage are the usual examples.

What formats does this Fort Smith artwork come in, and does it work as a gift?

It is offered as a Fine Art Print, a Framed Fine Art Print, a Glossy Metal Print and a Digital Download, with size and finish options on the product selector. Physical pieces are made to order and the digital version is a file. It gifts well for anyone with a Fort Smith connection, from pilots who have flown 08/26 to people who simply grew up under the pattern.
