Dimensions

Fine Art Print: 8 x 10, 16 x 20, and 24 x 30 inches.

Made like something you keep.

The field itself

This is Fort Huachuca Sierra Vista's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Sierra Vista Municipal-Libby AAF Runway Diagram Print

FHU prints as one very long horizontal line with a narrow triangle stacked on its right end. That line is Runway 08/26, 12,001 by 150 feet of concrete, and it runs the full width of the sheet while the airfield buildings and aprons stay clustered toward the right. Almost half the runway reaches out west past the last taxiway into open paper, which is the detail that makes this composition unusual: a very long stroke with all the activity gathered at one end.

The other two runways are short and sit at angles. Runway 12/30 falls from upper left to lower right at 5,367 by 100 feet, and Runway 03/21 climbs from lower left to upper right at 4,286 by 75 feet, both asphalt and concrete. They cross each other near the top of the diagram and then both cut down across the main runway, so the three strips close a slim triangle above the long line. Runway 30 carries on a short distance past the crossing, which keeps the shape from looking symmetrical.

Sierra Vista Municipal is a joint-use civil and military airport that shares facilities with Libby Army Airfield, on Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, Cochise County, Arizona. Libby Army Airfield takes its name from Medal of Honor recipient George D. Libby. Scheduled commuter airline service linked the field to Tucson and Phoenix through 2007. The corner block carries the identifier, the coordinates and the field elevation of 4,719 feet, high desert numbers that read as quietly as the rest of the sheet.

On a wall the piece behaves like a long horizontal rule with one dense knot of geometry, so it hangs well above a desk, a console table or a doorway, with the open paper above and below the runways giving it room to breathe. Runway ends 8, 26, 12, 30, 3 and 21 are labeled small, and the ink weight separates paved runway from taxiway and apron in the colorway you choose.

Fort Huachuca Sierra Vista (FHU) print, common questions

How many runways does FHU have, and how long is the longest?

Three. Runway 08/26 is the longest at 12,001 by 150 feet in concrete, Runway 12/30 measures 5,367 by 100 feet, and Runway 03/21 measures 4,286 by 75 feet, the two shorter ones in asphalt and concrete. All three appear on the print, with the long one spanning the sheet.

Where is FHU, and what is the field elevation?

It sits at Fort Huachuca Sierra Vista, Arizona, at 31.5885 degrees north and 110.3444 degrees west, in Cochise County. Field elevation is 4,719 feet, and that number is printed in the corner block along with the coordinates.

What does FHU refer to, and why not the four letter code?

FHU is the identifier for Sierra Vista Municipal-Libby AAF, the joint-use civil and military airport that shares facilities with Libby Army Airfield. The print uses the three character form because it is the one pilots and locals say out loud, and it sets cleanly at large type size.

Is the diagram accurate to the published layout?

It is plotted from published airport information, so the 12,001 ft main runway and the two shorter angled runways sit in their published positions and proportions. It is a design piece rather than a navigation chart, so fine details may be simplified or omitted. Taxiway edges, markings, lighting and signage are reduced so the layout stays legible at wall size.

What sizes and finishes are available?

Several standard sizes are offered, and the wide horizontal reach of Runway 08/26 rewards the larger ones. Each physical piece is made to order in the colorway you choose, as a Fine Art Print, Framed Fine Art Print or Glossy Metal Print (Digital Download available separately).

Does this work as a gift?

Yes, particularly for anyone with a Fort Huachuca or Sierra Vista connection, a soldier or pilot who has flown into Libby Army Airfield, or a family that has lived in Cochise County. The layout is specific enough to be recognized immediately by someone who knows the field.
