Eielson AFB Runway Diagram Print

EIL has one runway, and it is a monster: 14/32, 14,530 feet long and 150 feet wide, concrete, sitting at 548 feet of elevation. In the print that single strip does all the work. It runs almost top to bottom of the sheet, tipped a few degrees off vertical, inked dark against a pale ground, with the 14 threshold at the upper end and 32 at the lower. There is no second runway to balance it and no crossing strip to break it up, so the composition is a long unbroken line, which is a rarer and cleaner thing on a wall than the usual X or V.

Around it, the field fills in on one side only. A taxiway runs the full length parallel to the runway, and the gray pavement thickens eastward into apron, hangar blocks and building footprints that step down the right edge of the drawing. Near the 32 end the pavement swings into a wide loop, an enclosed shape that gives the lower right quadrant some weight and keeps the tall runway from looking stranded. That asymmetry is the whole charm of this one: dense structure on one flank, open ground on the other.

Eielson was established in 1943 as Mile 26 Satellite Field and redesignated Eielson Air Force Base in 1948, named in honor of polar pilot Carl Ben Eielson. Since 1993 the host unit has been the 354th Fighter Wing, whose primary mission is supporting RED FLAG-Alaska, the Pacific Air Forces training exercises flown over the Joint Pacific Alaskan Range Complex. The airmen here call themselves Icemen, and the wing motto is "Ready to go at fifty below!" The base sits about 26 miles southeast of Fairbanks. On a wall of Alaska diagrams it anchors the interior, and smaller interior and Southcentral fields such as Delta Junction and Palmer read as quiet counterweights beside it.
