St. Louis Downtown Airport Runway Diagram Print

St. Louis Downtown (CPS) carries three runways, and the print leads with the parallel pair. 12R/30L is the long one at 7,002 by 150 feet of asphalt, and 12L/30R runs beside it at 5,301 by 75 feet of concrete, the two of them cutting a single wide diagonal from the upper left of the sheet down to the lower right. Field elevation is 413 feet.

The third runway is the short one: 05/23, 2,799 by 75 feet of asphalt, set at the top left corner at a sharp angle to the pair, with the 23 end up against the building cluster and the 05 end pointing down and away. It does not meet the two long strips. That gives the composition a heavy double stroke across the page and a thin bar leaning into one corner, which is a more interesting shape than a plain X and the reason this field hangs well without a mat full of clutter.

The airport opened in 1929 as Curtiss-Steinberg Airport, then went through a run of names: Curtiss-Parks in 1940, Parks Metropolitan later that same year, Bi-State Parks after the field closed in 1959 and reopened, St. Louis Downtown-Parks in 1984, and the current name in 1999. The United States Army Air Forces took the field over in 1939 for basic pilot training, with Parks Air College running the contract program on Fairchild PT-19s until the military airfield was inactivated in 1944. Two of the original four hangars are still there. The field sits in Greater St. Louis, just east of the central business district of Cahokia Heights, in St. Clair County, close to the Gateway Arch riverfront.

On a wall it stays quiet. The runways print as solid dark bars with their designators reversed out in white, taxiways and apron edges sit back in gray, and a wide margin lets that diagonal run corner to corner.
