Battle Creek Executive at Kellogg Field Runway Diagram Print

Three runways at Battle Creek, and the print comes out as one long X with a short strip lying alongside it. Runway 05L/23R is 10,004 by 150 feet and takes the full diagonal of the sheet from southwest to northeast. Runway 13/31, 4,837 by 100 feet, drops in from the northwest and crosses it about three quarters of the way toward the 23R end, so the intersection sits high on the page rather than in the middle. The third runway, 05R/23L at 4,100 by 75 feet, runs parallel to the long one on its southeast side, short and blunt, with its northeast end finishing right where 13/31 runs out. Field elevation is 952 feet and magnetic variation is 4W. Hangars, ramps and terminal blocks line the northeast edge and the middle of the field, while the western side is left as open outline.

The field exists because a cereal man paid for it. In September 1924 the Battle Creek Chamber of Commerce leased a farm with an option to purchase it for an aviation field, and the airport opened in 1925 under W. K. Kellogg, who covered the land option and the first years of improvements and equipment. Air mail reached the field in the summer of 1928 and regular passenger service followed in 1929. The first air traffic control tower was installed in 1935, the first of its kind in Michigan outside Detroit. In the Second World War the United States Army Air Forces used the airfield, and in August 1943 the 394th Bombardment Group came here to train before shipping out to the United Kingdom in 1944. In 1947 the airport was designated as the base for the 172nd Fighter Squadron of the Michigan Air National Guard.

The short parallel is the newest line on the diagram. Construction began in May 2010 on a 4,100 by 75 foot runway beside the existing 05/23, and it opened as 05R/23L on July 7, 2011. The airport covers 1,500 acres, and it took its present name in December 2019 when the Battle Creek City Commission renamed it the Battle Creek Executive Airport at Kellogg Field. As of 2022 the Michigan Air National Guard was flying the MQ-9 Reaper from the field.
