Mobile International Airport Runway Diagram Print

Mobile International Airport runs two runways, and the longer one sets the whole diagonal of the print. Runway 14/32 is 9,618 by 150 feet and falls from the northwest corner of the field down to the southeast. Runway 18/36, 7,800 by 150 feet, drops straight down the sheet from the north and stops just short of that diagonal in its lower half, so the two converge toward the south without touching and open out toward the top like a narrow wedge. Field elevation is 26 feet and magnetic variation is 1W, which means the plotted headings sit close to true north. The aprons and the heavy building blocks of the Brookley complex fill the angle between the two runways in the northwest, and the southern half of the sheet is left to line alone.

This was not a civil airport for most of its life. Until 1969 the field was part of an active military installation, Brookley Air Force Base, and the ground it sat on is now the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, a 1,650 acre industrial complex for which the airport is the principal component. The airport itself covers 1,616 acres, three nautical miles south of downtown Mobile, and is owned and operated by the Mobile Airport Authority. Military flying never really left: in the twelve months ending October 31, 2023 the field recorded 21,276 aircraft operations, 53 percent of them military.

Scheduled passengers came back through a side door. Starting in late 2018 the Mobile Airport Authority converted a building partly occupied by Airbus into a low cost carrier facility called Terminal 1, with two boarding gates and five ticket counters. It opened in 2019, on the first of May, and the first scheduled revenue flight to arrive was a Frontier Airlines service from Chicago. The terminal stands at the southern end of Michigan Avenue inside the Brookley complex, less than a mile south of Interstate 10. On the print the layout is left to speak plainly: runway designators, lengths and widths follow the published figures, taxiways and apron edges are reduced to flat geometry, and the ground tone you choose carries everything else.
