Acadiana Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

The field belongs to Iberia Parish and sits about four nautical miles northwest of the New Iberia business district, near U.S. 90. From 1960 to 1965 the Navy ran it as Naval Auxiliary Air Station New Iberia, an advanced flight training base whose principal assigned unit was Training Squadron Twenty Seven, flying TS-2A Trackers, versions of the Grumman S-2 with the antisubmarine gear removed and converted into multi piston engine trainers. The station closed in 1965 when that squadron was reassigned to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Texas, and control of the airfield went back to local civilian government.

Later use gave the ramp its industrial character. Gulf Air Transport, a charter airline that ran Boeing 727s and stretched DC-8s along with Convair 580 and Lockheed L-188 Electra turboprops, was headquartered here from 1979 to 1990, and the aircraft painting firm AvEx worked from the large hangar complex on the field, finishing new Boeing 787 Dreamliners for the manufacturer during 2015 and 2016. In the 12 month period ending January 31, 2007 the airport recorded 95,851 aircraft operations with 46 aircraft based on the field, 37 percent of them helicopters, which fits the offshore oil and gas flying done along this stretch of coast. Navy F/A-18 Hornets from a reserve squadron in New Orleans were repeat visitors in earlier years.
