Nantucket Memorial Airport Runway Diagram Print

Nantucket Memorial works on paper because both of its runways are long enough to read as graphics: 6/24 at 6,303 feet by 150 feet, and 15/33 at 4,500 feet by 100 feet, both asphalt. In the print they cross high on the sheet, near the 24 end and near the 15 end, so the two black strips splay down and out from a junction pinned close to the upper edge. The longer strip climbs from the lower left to the upper right. The shorter one falls away from the same junction toward the lower right and finishes at 33. The result is a lopsided X with one very short arm, an off center shape that gives the composition somewhere to lean.

The rest of the sheet stays quiet. Taxiways, the apron and the terminal buildings sit in soft gray along the north side of 6/24, clustered at the top of the frame, and a single gray taxiway sweeps out to the 33 end across open ground. Only the runways carry black, labeled 6, 24, 15 and 33 as published. Published airport information for cycle 2609 (effective 2026-08-06) guides the relative runway geometry, drawn to scale, with the identifier ACK, the city line, the coordinates and an elevation of 47 feet set low in the right margin.

The field started as farmland. In the late 1930s Leslie Holm, a farmer in Nobadeer, plowed and smoothed cornfields with the help of David Raub, a former test pilot living on the island, and the Town of Nantucket began using the property as an airfield. The U.S. Navy took the airport over during World War II and ran it as Naval Auxiliary Air Facility Nantucket, then returned it to the town in 1946, when it was dedicated as Nantucket Memorial Airport to honor Nantucket people who served and died in the war. In 2009 the terminal was updated and expanded beyond the original 1950s facility. Hang this one beside a Boston or Providence print and the contrast does the talking: a busy mainland grid next to an island field with two strips and a lot of open ground.
