Zamperini Field Runway Diagram Print

Zamperini Field reads as two parallel black strips laid on a long diagonal, running from the upper left of the sheet down to the lower right. The longer one is 11L/29R at 5,001 by 150 ft, marked at both ends in the print. Below and slightly inboard sits 11R/29L, shorter and narrower at 3,000 by 75 ft. Both are asphalt and concrete. Nothing crosses, nothing forks: it is a clean pair of lines held at the same angle, which is why this diagram works as graphic art rather than as a puzzle.

The field opened in 1943, completed by the United States Army Air Forces and known then as Lomita Flight Strip, an emergency landing field for military aircraft on training flights. It closed after World War II and was handed to local government, and once the City of Torrance took it over the name changed to Zamperini Field on the fifth anniversary of Pearl Harbor, honoring local sports and war hero Louis Zamperini. The airport sits three miles southwest of downtown Torrance, in Los Angeles County, close enough to the coastal basin traffic that pilots based here share the sky with everything moving in and out of Los Angeles.

On a wall, the pale ground carries most of the weight. The two runways are the only dark shapes, and everything else is soft grey: the taxiway web threading between the strips, the ranks of hangars along the northwest edge, the ramp and tiedown block anchoring the southeast corner.
