Witham Field Runway Diagram Print

Witham Field runs three runways, and the print draws all three: 12/30 at 5,828 feet, 16/34 at 5,000 feet, and 07/25 at 4,653 feet, each 100 feet wide. On the sheet they do not sit parallel to anything. Runway 12/30 falls from the left edge down toward the lower right, 07/25 climbs from the left across to the upper right, and 16/34 drops from the top of the field to meet 12/30 near the bottom right corner. The three strokes enclose a big open triangle of taxiway and apron, which is what gives this diagram its shape on a wall: a hard geometric figure with one wide, quiet interior.

The field is barely above sea level, at 16 feet, and it sits a mile southeast of downtown Stuart in Martin County. The name comes from Paul "Homer" Witham, a Naval Aviation Pilot First Class and the first Naval Aviator from the city of Stuart to die in World War II. During the war the site served as a Navy training field, operating as an auxiliary to Naval Air Station Vero Beach for carrier-based and land-based fighter and light bomber crews. Some of that wartime geometry is still legible in the way the runways cut across each other rather than lining up.

Later chapters left marks too. Scheduled passenger service by Air Florida was running seven daily departures to West Palm Beach in 1984. Northrop Grumman downsized its Witham Field operation in 1994, returning much of the property to Martin County. None of that history is written on the print, but it explains why a small coastal field carries a runway pattern this ambitious.

Rendered as art, the layout is unusually easy to live with. The black runway strokes read first from across a room, the grey taxiways and hangar clusters in the lower left fill in as you get closer, and the identifier block sits quietly in the corner with the coordinates and elevation.
