Lakefront Airport Runway Diagram Print

Three runways, and on the sheet they read as one tall cross. Runway 18R/36L runs nearly the full height of the print at 6,879 by 150 feet, the longest pavement on the field. A shorter strip, 18L/36R at 3,697 by 75 feet, sits parallel just to its right and stops around the middle of the image. Lower down, 9/27 (3,114 by 75 feet) cuts straight across the long runway at a right angle, and it is the only crossing drawn on the sheet. All three are asphalt, and the elevation block reads 7 feet, about as close to sea level as a print gets.

The field was built out into the water. Construction began in 1929 on a man-made peninsula dredged into Lake Pontchartrain on the eastern side of the city, and the terminal that came with it is Art Deco, hidden for decades behind a bomb-proof facade added after World War II and since returned to its original appearance. The airport was renamed New Orleans Airport in 1939, and the identifier NEW stayed put after the Lakefront name arrived. Its airline role ended in 1946, when that traffic shifted to a larger field in a nearby suburb, and a national airport plan for 2011 to 2015 categorized it as a general aviation reliever. Since 2014 the field has hosted a three-day World War II air, sea and land festival, and the restored terminal stood in for a fictional aircraft company in a superhero film released in 2011.

As art, the balance is what carries it: a heavy vertical beam holding the left side, a lighter parallel bar beside it, one horizontal stroke near the bottom, and taxiways and hangar rows in a quieter tone fanning off to the southeast. Plenty of open paper surrounds all of it, so the layout stays graphic instead of busy. The corner block carries NEW, the city and state, the coordinates and the elevation, readable from across a room in whichever colorway you choose. Hang it on its own in a hallway, or set it beside Baton Rouge or Gulfport if you are building out a Gulf Coast wall.
