Altus AFB Runway Diagram Print

Altus AFB reads as three parallel strips, every one of them running north to south with nothing crossing anything. The spine of the drawing is 18R/36L at 13440 feet long and 150 feet wide, a concrete line that runs almost the full height of the sheet. Its partner 18L/36R sits well to the east at 9001 feet by the same 150 feet of width. Two long verticals, widely spaced, with a lot of quiet field between them: that is the whole composition, and it is why this one hangs so cleanly.

The third runway is the surprise. Designated 176/356, it measures 3500 feet by 90 feet and tucks into the upper middle of the field, shorter and narrower than its neighbors and stopping less than halfway down the sheet. It breaks the symmetry just enough to keep the eye moving. All three surfaces are grooved concrete, and all the built texture (ramp, hangars, the fan of taxiways) is pushed to the west side of 18R/36L, so the print carries weight on the left and open space on the right. Elevation is 1382 feet.

The history behind the shape is plain enough. The base opened in 1943 as Altus Army Airfield, and the C-17 Globemaster III arrived in 1996, which tells you what a 13440 foot runway is for. The field sits about 4 miles east-northeast of Altus in southwestern Oklahoma.
