Lake Hood Airport Runway Diagram Print

Lake Hood is a one-runway field: 14/32, 2,200 feet long and 75 feet wide, gravel. On the sheet that strip is the only solid runway shape, a narrow hatched band running from the 14 end near the top down to the 32 end on the right side. Field elevation is 79 feet, and the print carries it under the LHD block with the coordinates.

The reason the rest of the drawing looks so unlike a normal airport diagram is that Lake Hood is a state-owned seaplane base, sitting on Lakes Hood and Spenard about 3 nautical miles southwest of the central business district of Anchorage, with the gravel strip as a runway adjacent to the base. The dashed outlines crossing the middle of the composition are the seaplane landing areas, water rather than pavement, and they read as ghost lines beneath the solid taxiway loop and the fingers of parking. The base has an operating control tower, and during the winter months the frozen lake surface is maintained for ski-equipped airplanes.

As wall art it earns its place on shape alone. One hatched strip in the upper right, a long teardrop of taxiway wrapping the shoreline, rows of small structures clustered along the west and south edges, and two dashed lanes running out past the lower right corner where most diagrams would have nothing. It sits well in a group of Alaska fields, Palmer and Kenai included, and it holds a wall by itself. Whatever colorway you choose, the 14 and 32 end labels stay readable from a step back.
