Scholes International at Galveston Airport Runway Diagram Print

GLS draws as a lopsided X. Runway 18/36 runs almost straight down the sheet, 6,001 feet of concrete at 150 feet wide, and 14/32 cuts across it on the diagonal from upper left to lower right, 6,000 feet of asphalt and concrete at the same width. The two strips meet low on the field, well below center, which is what gives the composition its lean: one long vertical spine, one angled stroke, and a wide margin of quiet around both. Field elevation is 6 feet, about as close to sea level as pavement gets.

Scholes is a general aviation airport operated and maintained by the City of Galveston, three miles southwest of the city, and the national plan for integrated airport systems covering 2011 through 2015 categorized it as a reliever field. Its bones are wartime: during World War II the site was re-designated an Army Air Corps base and named Galveston Army Air Field, and three hard surface runways were built there for army aircraft. The terminal was completed in 1949 and the field renamed Scholes in honor of airport manager and aviation pioneer Robert Scholes. The Lone Star Flight Museum sat here from 1985 until 2017, then moved to Ellington Airport near Houston.

Runway pavement is rendered in solid dark, the taxiway loops and apron in a lighter gray that pools along the right edge, with the terminal ramp and its row of small parking shapes stacked toward the top corner.
