Scottsbluff/Western Nebraska Regional/William B Heilig Field Runway Diagram Print

Western Nebraska Regional Airport works two runways, and on the diagram they cross near the middle of the field in a wide X. Runway 12/30 is 8,279 by 150 feet and runs northwest to southeast; runway 5/23 is 8,002 by 150 feet and runs southwest to northeast. The two are close enough in length that neither arm of the X dominates, so the composition is nearly symmetric and the crossing point carries the weight. Field elevation is 3,967 feet above sea level and magnetic variation is 10E, which is why the plotted headings sit well off true north.

The field as it stands is a World War II product. Scottsbluff was selected on September 5, 1942 as one of seven satellite air bases in Nebraska, twenty-eight farms were vacated to make room, and construction began two days later, with concrete for three runways poured in forty-five days. As Scottsbluff Army Airfield it began under Second Air Force as a satellite of the Army air field at Casper, Wyoming, and bomber crews training on B-17s and B-24s came here for their final work under the 4190th Army Air Force Base Unit. In 1944 command passed to the 1st Troop Carrier Command and the field became a satellite of the Army airfield at Alliance, training C-47 and glider crews. It closed on December 31, 1945, and control went to the City of Scottsbluff in 1947.

The airport sits three miles east of Scottsbluff in Scotts Bluff County and carries the name William B. Heilig Field, for the man known as Scottsbluff's Mr. Aviation, a wartime Army Air Force primary flight instructor who went on to manage the city's airport. Scotts Bluff County took control in July 1970 and has run the field since. On the print the runway designators, lengths and widths follow the published figures, while the taxiways, the terminal apron and the hangar rows tucked into the wedge south of the crossing are reduced to flat geometry over the ground tone you choose.
