Walnut Ridge Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

Walnut Ridge Regional (ARG) prints as a triangle, which is why it works on a wall. Two long strips converge to a point at the right side of the field: 04/22, the longest at 6,001 by 150 feet with an asphalt surface, and 13/31 at 5,003 by 150 feet in concrete. The third runway, 18/36, runs straight from top to bottom at 5,001 by 150 feet, also concrete, and cuts across both diagonals to close the shape. Apron and taxiway pavement fills the left half in a lighter tone, so the three black runways carry the composition. The layout has a reason for being this generous. The US Army opened Walnut Ridge Army Airfield in 1942 as a pilot training school, where Air Cadets flew the Vultee BT-13 Valiant, and 4,641 pilots graduated from the basic school before it closed. The Navy took the field over in 1944 and ran it as a Marine Corps Air Facility until it was decommissioned in 1945. A radar station operated here from 1956 until 1963. In 1964 The Beatles made a brief stop at this airport traveling to and from a retreat in Missouri, a visit the town later marked with a monument, a plaza and a music festival. In 1999 a museum opened at the airfield, with a BT-13 among the aircraft on display.
