The field itself

This is Watsonville's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Watsonville Municipal Airport Runway Diagram Print

Watsonville Municipal (WVI) prints as a clean X. Two runways cross in the upper half of the sheet: 02/20, the longer strip at 4,502 by 149 feet, runs as a steep diagonal from the bottom left corner up to the top edge, and 09/27, 3,998 by 98 feet, cuts across it on a near horizontal line. Both are asphalt. The field sits at 163 feet, and the crossing point falls high and left of center, which is what gives the whole composition its lean.

The shorter runway earns its place on the wall the same way it earns its place in the wind. 09/27 is the crosswind runway, used when winds favor it and when fog moves across the field from Monterey Bay. On the print that role reads plainly: a thinner bar meeting a heavier one at a wide angle, with pale taxiway loops threading around both ends and back toward the ramp.

The airport has a wartime chapter behind it. The Navy took control of the civilian field in 1943, added support buildings and a concrete ramp, and commissioned it as Naval Auxiliary Air Station Watsonville, a satellite of Naval Air Station Alameda. It returned to the City of Watsonville in 1947. Today the drawing carries that weight in its apron: a broad gray pad with ranks of hangar rows to the right of the crossing, and a second cluster trailing down the lower left beside runway 02.

It hangs as geometry first. Two dark bars, one gray field of pavement, a lot of quiet paper, then the identifier block, coordinates and field elevation set in the lower right. Small field, honest drawing, and it holds a hallway or a desk wall without shouting.

Watsonville (WVI) print, common questions

How many runways does Watsonville Municipal have?

Two. Runway 02/20 and runway 09/27 cross each other, and the print draws both, along with the taxiways and apron around them.

How long are the runways at WVI?

Runway 02/20 is the longest at 4,502 by 149 feet. The crosswind runway, 09/27, is 3,998 by 98 feet. Both surfaces are asphalt.

Where is Watsonville Municipal, and how high is the field?

Field elevation is 163 feet. The airport lies about three miles northwest of Watsonville, in Santa Cruz County, California, at roughly 36.9357 N, 121.7896 W. Those coordinates and the elevation are printed under the identifier.

Is the print accurate to the published airport layout?

Runway positions, lengths, widths and the angle where the two strips cross are plotted from published runway data for Watsonville Municipal. It is a design piece rather than a navigation chart, so fine details may be simplified or omitted. Markings, lighting, signage and small structures are the first things reduced.

What does WVI stand for?

WVI is the identifier assigned to Watsonville Municipal. It is the code you see on the print, set large in the lower right above the city and state line.

What sizes can I get, and does it work as a gift?

Each print is made to order in a range of sizes, in the colorway you choose. It is an easy gift for a pilot who trained here, a Santa Cruz County local, or anyone who has flown the pattern over the Pajaro Valley.
