Santa Barbara Municipal Airport Runway Diagram Print

Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA) has three runways, and the print draws all three. Runway 7/25 is the long one at 6,052 feet by 150 feet, and it runs straight across the sheet as a single unbroken bar with its numbers seated at each end. The two shorter strips, 15R/33L at 4,184 feet by 100 feet and 15L/33R at 4,180 feet by 75 feet, sit tight against each other and fall away toward the lower right, crossing the long runway above the center of the composition. Every surface here is asphalt.

That crossing is what carries the image. The parallels are spaced so closely, and are so nearly the same length, that from across a room they read as one wide diagonal stroke, then separate into two distinct strips as you step in. Against them the long horizontal runway is the anchor, and the taxiways, aprons and terminal footprints are rendered a step lighter so the paved strips stay dominant in whatever colorway you choose. Field elevation is 14 feet, printed under the identifier at the lower right.

The airport covers 948 acres about 7 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, next to the University of California, Santa Barbara campus and close to Goleta, with the wetland of the Goleta Slough along its edge. The field once had a fourth strip, runway 3/21, and its removal is attributed to the university's growth to the southwest and hangar construction to the northeast. So the geometry on the wall is the shape left after that subtraction. Older layers sit beneath it: a flight school opened in a cow pasture near Hollister and Fairview Avenues in 1928, groundbreaking for the municipal airport came in 1941, and the field served as MCAS Santa Barbara, a Marine aviator training base, in 1942 before reverting to a civilian airport in 1946.

The flying out of here was coastal from the start. In 1933 Pacific Seaboard Air Lines was running two daily round trips on single engine Bellanca CH-300s that stopped at Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo on the way up to San Francisco. Much later, in 1984, American Airlines MD-80s worked a triangle routing to Dallas/Fort Worth that could run by way of Bakersfield. Hang this one on its own and it is a quiet piece of coastal geometry; hang it in a row of California fields and the whole line reads.
