Ottumwa Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

Ottumwa Regional has two runways, and they cross, which is why this print reads as one clean X. Runway 13/31 is the long arm at 6,001 feet by 100 feet of concrete, falling from the upper left of the sheet to the lower right. Runway 4/22 climbs the other way, 4,601 feet by 100 feet, and the two meet left of center rather than at the middle of the paper. That off-center crossing is what makes the composition work: the intersection pulls your eye left, then the taxiways and the apron carry it back to the right, where the buildings sit in a small cluster of blocks.

The field started as Naval Air Station Ottumwa. The Navy approved the site in 1942 and the first Naval Aviation Cadets arrived in 1943, flying primary training out of a base cut from Iowa farmland. More than 4,600 naval aviators earned their wings of gold at Ottumwa before pre flight training was moved away and the city took the base over in 1947. Scheduled airline service came later and then went: it ended in 2001. The airport took its current name in 2008, and a renovation in 2009 repaved and extended runway 4/22 and added a parallel taxiway.

Ottumwa Regional sits six miles northwest of Ottumwa, in Wapello County, and runway 13/31 is the primary runway, with an instrument landing system serving runway 31.
