Patuxent River NAS (Trapnell Field) Runway Diagram Print

NHK draws as a bold X. Patuxent River NAS (Trapnell Field) has three runways, and the two long ones do the heavy lifting on the wall: 06/24 runs 11,799 feet from lower left to upper right, 14/32 runs 9,732 feet from upper left to lower right, and they meet just past the center of the sheet. Both are 200 feet wide and both are asphalt, so in the artwork they land as two heavy bars of equal weight, neither one deferring to the other. That symmetry is why this field composes so cleanly: the crossing point sits high and slightly right, and everything else in the image hangs off it.

The third runway is the quiet one. 02/20 measures 5,021 feet by 75 feet, and at a quarter of the width of the other two it plots as a thin near vertical line on the left side of the field, clipping across 14/32 and running down to the corner where the 06 threshold begins. Around all of it, taxiways, aprons and buildings are held back in a lighter tone, including the long ramp sprawl on the west side and the string of structures trailing toward the bottom right. The station sits in St. Mary's County on the Chesapeake Bay near the mouth of the Patuxent River, and the plotted footprint keeps that peninsula shape rather than squaring itself off. Coordinates and ELEV 39 FT are set in small type under the identifier.

There is real history under the geometry. The station was commissioned in 1943, the Test Pilot School was established there in 1945 with the Navy's Flight Test Group transferred from Naval Air Station Anacostia, and in 1976 the airfield itself was named for pioneering aviator VADM Frederick M. Trapnell, a former commander of the Naval Air Test Center at the station. None of that is written on the print. It just explains why a test field ended up with two runways this long pointed in two directions.
