The field itself

This is Winston Salem's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Smith Reynolds Airport Runway Diagram Print

Two runways cross at Smith Reynolds, and the crossing is the whole composition. Runway 15/33 measures 6,655 feet by 150 feet and runs from upper left down to lower right across the sheet. Runway 04/22 measures 3,938 feet by 150 feet and cuts the other way, so the two asphalt strips meet high in the frame rather than at its center. Both are drawn at their published widths, which is why the shorter runway does not read as thinner, only as shorter.

On a wall the layout reads as a lopsided X. The strips lock together near the top, then the 15/33 leg keeps going alone, one long diagonal carrying the eye all the way to the bottom right corner. Grey taxiway and apron shapes cluster tight around the junction and along the northwest side, then thin out into a single parallel line beside the long leg. Under the identifier the print carries the coordinates and the field elevation, 969 feet, set small so the runway geometry stays the loud part. The result is asymmetric on purpose, which tends to hang better off center than a neat symmetrical field does.

The airport sits northeast of Winston Salem in Forsyth County. The site question was settled early when land west of Greensboro was chosen over a Winston Salem tract and Winston Salem left the Tri-city Airport Commission, so the city built its own field instead. It opened as Miller Municipal Airport and was renamed for Smith Reynolds in 1942. Piedmont Airlines was based here from 1948 until 1989, and in 1960 Eastern Air Lines listed nonstop flights from the field to Charlotte. None of that history is labeled on the print; it is just the reason these two runways ended up this long and this wide.

Winston Salem (INT) print, common questions

How many runways does INT have?

Two. Runway 15/33 is 6,655 feet by 150 feet on an asphalt surface, and runway 04/22 is 3,938 feet by 150 feet, also asphalt. They cross near the upper part of the drawing, which is what gives the print its X.

How long is runway 15/33 at Smith Reynolds?

6,655 feet, at 150 feet wide. That single diagonal takes up most of the height of the print, running from the 15 end at upper left to the 33 end at lower right.

What is the field elevation at Smith Reynolds?

969 feet. It is set in small type under the identifier block, with the coordinates, so the number is there without competing with the runways.

Where is Smith Reynolds, and what is INT?

It is in Winston Salem, North Carolina, at 36.1337 N, 80.2220 W, northeast of the city in Forsyth County. INT is the three letter identifier for the airport, and it is the code printed large at the lower right.

How accurate is the diagram to the published airport layout?

It is composed from published runway data for INT, so the two runways carry their published lengths, widths and crossing angle. It is a design piece rather than a navigation chart, so fine details may be simplified or omitted. Markings, lighting, signage and smaller pavement edges are examples of what gets left out. Do not use it for flight planning.

What sizes and finishes are available, and does this work as a gift?

Several sizes are offered, printed to order in the colorway you choose, as a Fine Art Print, Framed Fine Art Print or Glossy Metal Print (Digital Download available separately). It reads well as a gift for anyone with a Winston Salem connection: a student pilot, a mechanic, or someone who spent years driving past the field.
