Hickory Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

Hickory Regional puts a single labeled runway on the sheet: 6/24, 6,401 feet long and 150 feet wide, asphalt, at a field elevation of 1,190 feet. On the print it reads as one dark bar running from the lower left to the upper right, the 6 threshold down near the bottom corner and 24 set high in the opposite one. Nothing else on the page carries that much ink, so the eye tracks the diagonal end to end before it picks up anything smaller.

Around that bar the pavement drops to a quiet gray. A paler strip runs close to north and south and crosses the dark runway in the lower left third of the drawing, taxiways thread up toward a cluster of buildings above the crossing, and rows of hangars step off to the west side. What you get is a deliberately lopsided composition: one long stroke through the middle, the weight gathered high and left, and open space held across the bottom. It works in a group of field diagrams and it holds a wall by itself, in whichever colorway you choose.

Flying here goes back to 1940, when the field opened with two unpaved runways, and the first scheduled flight, in 1941, was a Boeing 247 each way between Norfolk and Knoxville. From 1979 commuter operators ran as many as six trips a day to Charlotte, and the last scheduled airline left in 2005. Two dates still show up in the drawing: an instrument landing system was commissioned on runway 24 in 1977, the end labeled at the upper right, and the terminal building that opened in 1960 now holds airport administration and the Hickory Aviation Museum. A tornado took out hangars on the north side in 2017, and the replacement was finished in 2021.
