Godman AAF Runway Diagram Print

Godman AAF works two asphalt runways, and on the print they lean toward each other into a narrow V that never quite closes. Runway 18/36 is the long one at 5184 ft by 150 ft, dropping almost straight down the sheet. Runway 15/33 enters from the upper left on a diagonal, 4853 ft by 75 ft, and its 33 end stops just short of the 36 threshold at the bottom. That is the whole composition: two dark strips, wide apart at the top, converging toward a point near the lower edge.

The field sits on the Fort Knox United States Army post in Hardin County, Kentucky, which is why the right side of the diagram is so busy. Taxiways fan off the 18/36 centerline into a dense grey block of ramp and hangar footprints, and that asymmetry carries the design: empty paper on the left, structure stacked on the right. Godman also has a strange page in its history. In 1948, control tower operators here sighted an unidentified object near the base, and the pursuit flown by Captain Thomas Mantell ended in a fatal crash roughly 90 miles south of the field.

The designators, the relative angles and the apron outlines are plotted from published runway data. Coordinates and the 754 ft elevation sit in the corner under the identifier, in small type that rewards a close look without competing with the runway geometry. At a distance the piece reads as a graphic wedge; up close it reads as an airfield.
