Akron Fulton International Airport Runway Diagram Print

Akron Fulton International prints as one line of work: Runway 07/25, 6,336 by 150 feet of asphalt, running corner to corner across the sheet with the 7 end at lower left and the 25 end at upper right. That diagonal is the composition. The runway is the single solid dark mass in the frame, and the rest of the 1,171 acre field sits around it in quieter greys: the taxiway loops that hug its north side, a rank of narrow hangars, and the heavier building blocks below the strip.

The field carries more history than one runway suggests. Funding was allocated in 1924 and the airport opened in 1929, named for longtime manager Bain Ecarius 'Shorty' Fulton and his son Bain J. 'Bud' Fulton. Goodyear Aircraft built more than 130 airships and 4,000 naval FG-1D Corsair fighters here during World War II, and the field served as Naval Air Station Akron, training pilots through the Korean War and the Vietnam War. From 1951 through the 1960s it doubled as a drag racing strip. In 1985 the National Soaring Museum recognized it as the 3rd National Landmark of Soaring.

The lone strip is recent history as well. In 2020 the city council approved upgrades including a new lighting system and a runway reconstruction, and while the main runway was not altered, the smaller north/south runway was removed so nearby land could be developed for hangars and other building. What is left reads beautifully flat and graphic on a wall, one long stroke against open paper, with the AKR identifier block and ELEV 1067 FT set low in the corner.
